Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) has been selected as the lowest bidder (L1) to construct five Next Generation Corvettes (NGC) for the Indian Navy. The contract is valued at an estimated ₹25,000 crore. The Indian Navy plans to acquire eight such corvettes, and GRSE participated in the competitive bidding process conducted by the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The commercial bids were opened on May 21 in New Delhi by the Commercial Negotiation Committee (CNC).
GRSE is the only shipyard in India to have delivered more than 110 warships to the country’s maritime defense forces. Currently, GRSE is building four Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels (NGOPV) for the Navy. In addition, the shipyard is engaged in constructing three Advanced Guided Missile Frigates, seven Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft, and two large Survey Vessels.
Recently, GRSE delivered the first vessel in a series of eight Anti-Submarine Warfare Shallow Water Craft to the Indian Navy. GRSE has prior experience in building advanced corvettes, including three Khukri-class and four Kora-class guided missile corvettes. It has also built four Kamorta-class anti-submarine warfare corvettes, demonstrating its capability in warship construction.
Separately, the Bangladesh government canceled an order with GRSE for an advanced marine tug valued at approximately $21 million (₹179.75 crore). This cancellation is not expected to impact GRSE’s financial position significantly. As of March 31, 2025, GRSE’s order book stood at ₹22,680.75 crore, with the Bangladesh tug order contributing only 0.8 percent.
GRSE recently completed sea acceptance firing trials of the indigenous Naval Surface Gun NSG (30 mm) using an advanced Electro-Optical Fire Control System. This achievement involved collaboration with Messrs BHSEL (Hyderabad) and Messrs Elbit Systems Land, who provided technology and production support for the gun project. The product contains 60 percent indigenous content, which is expected to increase in future orders.
The Naval Surface Gun underwent rigorous quality tests and extensive sea firing trials on live targets to verify its precision and reliability. The system is designed to be a technically advanced weapon platform for the Indian Navy. This marks a strategic expansion of GRSE’s capabilities beyond shipbuilding into indigenous weapons manufacturing.
